Description Tim Lindsay 2008-02-08 23:50:40 CET
I would like access to the wiki. My forum username is: spudkika.
Hi, just wanted to add another option into the 'UpgradDisk' faq.

I was upgrading from 7.1.3 to 7.3, and tried to mount the original volume, but the last bit of the volume name was wrong, it should have been 'lv_root', instead of 'root', this caused me about 4 hours grief trying to work out how I had hosed my clients data and trying to work out how to get it back. Then I happened to notice it said the path was /dev/vg_primary/lv_root when I booted off the failed second disk of the original setup....

so in my case I had to use ....
mount /dev/new_vg_name/lv_root /mnt/tmp

instead of
mount /dev/new_vg_name/root /mnt/tmp

so I thought maybe adding a more info might be helpful for us half-intermediate type people ...
(If your disc does not mount try the following..
#mount /dev/new_vg_name/lv_root /mnt/tmp
)

I could not find the note but I took the liberty of adding one to http://wiki.contribs.org/UpgradeDisk. Marking RESOLVED FIXED.

You'll need to raise a bug in the contribs website section under the category mediawiki and give us a brief statement as to what you'll be bringing to the wiki.

I would if I could login into the wiki. I might have a user name there but if I do I've forgotten the password and there is no "forgot your password" link. If I try another name I get an error back not a "create new account" page. B-(

I'll raise a bug...

Dave, make it so.

Similar problem happened to me today see forum topic:

http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=40743.0

The only bug I can see is that the upgrade process didn't change the names, which I guess is a bit tricky to do anyway on a running system.

It would be useful to have a brief note on the, otherwise excellent, wiki "Raid" page that upgraded systems may well be using /dev/vg_primary/lv_root or, as Mr Lindsay, suggests using lvscan to check the location of the root partition.

Moving to SME Documentation - I don't see anything here which suggests there is a software bug to fix.
Comment 4 Tim Lindsay 2008-02-09 23:51:51 CET
maybe you could just add a note suggesting people run lvscan to confirm the dev/VolumeGroup/LogicalVolume that the root partition is on, if not /dev/vg_primary/root (or whatever it should be ) then they will need to modify the last mount command appropriately?

Then your 7.1.3 didn't start out as that. Those names weren't ever used in final release. They were used in very early betas/alphas. I don't think we want to change the wiki instructions. There should already be a note that the names used might not be exact and to check your system. If not then it might be worth adding a note to that effect.

Tim,
I am moving this item into the smeserver category for the Devs to check out. And changing the summary to reflect the issue you raise. If there is a need to add to the Wiki, this item can be moved to documentation later on.

To keep things tidy, please fill another bug report at staff to request access to the Wikis. One topic per bug is best.
Thanks.
